Food Gatherers Holiday Food Drive
In the spirit of the upcoming holiday season Biggs & Gunst is partnering with Food Gatherers to collect both food and donations to help those in need.
One in seven people suffer from food insecurity in Washtenaw County. This means that more 44,500 of our neighbors must make the tough choice between paying bills or feeding their families. To provide enough to feed these individuals, 6.4 million pounds of food must be raised annually. Food Gatherers serves Southeast Michigan as a leader in the collection and distribution of food to those in need.
Established in 1988, Food Gatherers is Michigan’s first food rescue program and was originally founded by Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Since then Food Gatherers has grown to become an independent 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and operated by 30 staff and more than 7,000 volunteers annually. Food Gatherers breaks the mold of traditional food banks with an overwhelming distribution of fresh food and healthy options to those they serve. These come in the form of hot meals, nutritious snacks or emergency groceries to low-income adults, seniors and children in Washtenaw County. Food Gatherers even created a “party in a bag,” providing all the essential items needed to throw a child a birthday party and put a smile on their face.
As the holiday season approaches, awareness of food insecurity in Washtenaw County is more important than ever. No one should have to choose between paying their bills and feeding their family.“We are deeply grateful to Scott and Brandon for their commitment to Food Gatherers and the clients who are served daily through Food Gatherers’ partner agencies and the Community Kitchen at the Delonis Center. A heartfelt thanks to these gentlemen as we move into the winter season when the need is greatest.” Wendy Pestrue, Chief Development Officer for Food Gatherers.
